Oof: Annapolis’s police chief has apologized for inaccurate statements he made about deaths related to the legalization of marijuana in Colorado, citing data pulled from a satirical news site (no, not The Onion, the other one), The Baltimore Sun reports.
Like something ripped from the pages of Literally Unbelievable—the website that compiles instances of people mistaking Onion articles for actual news—Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop quoted a fake The Daily Current article in a testimony regarding the legalization of marijuana in front of the Maryland Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday. The headline of that article? “Marijuana Overdoses Kill 37 in Colorado On First Day of Legalization.”
Upon learning that he indeed quoted completely fake and ludicrous data from a fake news website, Pristoop issued a public apology. “I apologize for the information I provided concerning the deaths. I believed the information I obtained was accurate but I now know the story is nothing more than an urban legend,” Pristoop said in a statement. “This does not take away from the other facts presented in opposition to legalization or the good work of the Maryland Chiefs and Maryland Sheriffs associations.”
Lesson learned: Check your facts, man.
