A vigil will be held at the Newseum today in support of four Al Jazeera staffers imprisoned in Egypt.
Al Jazeera English correspondent Peter Greste, and producers Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed have been detained on dubious charges related to terrorism for 61 days, while Al Jazeera Arabic’s Abdullah al-Shami has been detained since August with no charges. He’s been on a hunger strike for more than a month. The D.C. event, planned to begin at 4 p.m. and open to the public, is one of more than 30 that will be held worldwide in support of media freedom.
Online, Al Jazeera launched a #FreeAJStaff campaign to raise awareness about the plight of the imprisoned journalists. Egypt was named one of the ten leading jailers of journalists by the Committee to Project Journalists this December.
