House Speaker John Boehner, a member of the legislature that gets to review D.C.’s laws after they’re passed by the Council and signed by the mayor, was unaware that the city had passed a bill to decriminalize marijuana when asked about it by reporters today.

As the AP and Washington Post report, when asked about the bill, the Ohio politician said, “I really haven’t seen what the D.C. Council did, but I’m sure we’ll look at it.” We refers to Congress, which gets 60 days to review the bill. The measure would make possessing under an ounce of marijuana a civil penalty punishable with a $25 fine. Smoking pot outdoors, however, would still be a crime.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) said she does “not expect Members of Congress to interfere with D.C.’s local right to pass its own law on marijuana decriminalization. If Members try to interfere, however, I will stoutly defend D.C.’s right to pass such legislation, just as 17 states have already done.”

One of those states is Ohio.
