Three men were sentenced in Maryland today in connection to the 2011 murder of Howard University student and former Marine Alonzo Guyton.

According to the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s office, 20-year-old “Michael Jordan was sentenced to 95 years in prison for first degree felony murder”; “Lorenzo Carlton was sentenced to 70 years, suspend all but 35, for second degree murder and related charges”; and 22-year-old D.C. resident “William Knight was sentenced to 33 years, suspend all but 23, for robbery, theft and related charges.”

Carlton attempted to rob 24-year-old Guyton, who was walking to a friend’s house in Mt. Rainier, at gunpoint in October 2011, according to the government. A struggle ensued, leading Knight to announce that Carlton needed help. “Jordan then exited the vehicle they were in, armed with an SKS assault rifle, and shot Guyton multiple times,” a release states.

State’s Attorney Angela D. Alsobrooks described Guyton, a music composition major, as a “model citizen who served his country with honor, was working to earn his college degree and it is a tragedy that these three men conspired to take his life.”

At the time of his death, Howard called Guyton “a promising young man who was very active at Howard and well loved by his peers, faculty and the staff who worked closely with him.” An obituary said “he was affectionately known to family and friends as a lover of music, being joyful and kind.”
