>> Local saxophonist Antonio Parker has assembled some of the District’s best for performance on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets $5. A screening of Ellington at the White House, an official White House documentary, will follow.
>> Friday’s edition of the District Sounds Concert Series will be held at the Hill Center at the Old Naval Hospital. The program features bassist Kris Funn and his band, Corner Store. Chris Richards of The Washington Post will host a 30 minute discussion with Funn prior to the performance. 7 p.m. Tickets $10 in advance/$15 at the door.

>> Luísa Maita embodies the modern spirit of Brazil. Her latest album, Lero-Lero has pop and downtempo influences, but is definitely rooted in the samba tradition. Maita will be performing on Friday at Artisphere. 8 p.m. Tickets $18.
>> Tim Whalen has emerged as one of the DMV’s most distinctive pianists. Equally respected for his composing and arranging as he is for his improvising, Whalen’s septet is sure to be creating some intriguing sounds on Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. >> Mickey Bass is best known for playing his namesake instrument with drumming legend Art Blakey for much of the ’60s into the early ’70s. He is also an accomplished composer and arranger who has worked with a number of luminaries in that capacity. Bass will lead his Manhattan Burn Unit on Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets. Tickets $20 online/$25 at the door.
>> Still just in his 20s, Jonathan Batiste is a wonderful pianist, a dynamic performer and is well on his way to joining the pantheon of New Orleans’ jazz greats. His performances are spontaneous, engaging and always immensely entertaining. Batiste will be leading his band, Stay Human, on Saturday at The Howard Theatre in a performance presented by the Washington Performing Arts Society. 6 p.m. doors/8 p.m. show. Tickets $30.
>> Combining the infectious rhythms of South Asian bhangra music with the horn driven power of a New Orleans brass band, Red Baraat is rightfully building a reputation as one of the best live bands on the concert circuit. >> This Sunday marks the launch of the DC Jazz Singers Jam, which will be every Sunday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. downstairs at the Black Fox Lounge. Pianist Mark Meadows will lead the house band, and while the session is centered around vocalists, instrumentalists are also welcome.
