If you followed the Olympics in Sochi this year, you undoubtedly heard about the efforts to save streets dogs from mass euthanasia. And for many, it worked.

Tens dogs from Sochi landed at Dulles yesterday and headed to the Washington Area Rescue League, where they are now preparing to be adopted:

Wow, what a day! Great to welcome 10 dogs from Sochi, Russia to the Washington Animal Rescue League! Thanks to our partners at The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International for delivering these 10 sweet dogs. Now it’s our turn to go to work: medical evaluation, behavior evaluation some socialization and “chill time” here at WARL before we make them available for their forever homes.

“We are excited to make the connection for homeless Sochi dogs with loving homes in the United States, with our focus on helping street dogs in Russia and around the world,” Kelly O’Meara from Humane Society International said in a release. “Our goal is to protect street dogs from cruel and unnecessary killing programs—like the one employed by Sochi officials to “clean up” in advance of the Olympics—by working with governments to create humane and effective dog population management programs.”
