The Washington Post is considering a move of three blocks, from their famed 15th Street NW office all the way to K Street.
The Post’s Jonathan O’Connell says the paper “has letter of intent signed to move HQ to 1301 K St NW, near Franklin Sq. Still hurdles remaining.” He later tweeted, “No lease signed yet, but finally getting close.” The Washington Business Journal has more details:
The Post, owned by Amazon.com Inc. founder Jeff Bezos, is in negotiations to lease roughly 300,000 square feet from Hines Interests LP at One Franklin Square under a complex deal that could potentially involve displacing prominent D.C. law firm Reed Smith LLP, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. There are still many moving parts to the negotiations, those sources said, and Washington’s newspaper of record has kept several other options on the table in the event it cannot complete a deal to move to 1301 K St. NW.
This may be disappointing to the people who thought the Post would move to NoMa, where a new office building seems to go up every day. O’Connell says, “Lots of companies bid to build new HQ for the Post in NoMa etc. but we have to be out of here by Sept. 2016, so clock is ticking.”
There’s also this very important Dan Brown connection.
The Post’s current home sold for $159 million.
