Emancipation Day—the annual April city holiday celebrating the end of slavery in D.C.—is next Wednesday. And, as he teased in a $2,500 video last fall, Councilmember Vincent Orange (D-At Large) and the city have spared no expense in lining up a full week of celebrations, which includes a celebrity town hall, a festival parade, a free concert, and a number of different workshops.
The whole thing kicks off with an Emancipation Day Panel on Sunday at the The Lincoln Theatre at 6 p.m. with a “celebrity town hall covering emerging social issues within the African American community.” Panelists include Michael Skolnik, Chuck D, Toni Blackman, MC Hammer, Doug E Fresh, and Monie Love.
And then on Wednesday, the actual date of Emancipation Day, the parade kicks off at 11 a.m., as it goes down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Wilson Building. That’ll culminate in a big concert at Freedom Plaza with Brian Lenair, Talib Kweli, Raheem DeVaughn, Arrested Development, MC Lyte, Doug E Fresh, and more. And throughout the day, the Wilson Building will host an open house as well as a number of educational workshops.
There will also be fireworks, as the video so prominently promised.
Oh, and as a reminder, this whole thing cost a total of $350,000 of your taxpaying dollars, so you better go and enjoy it.
