Sean Combs—aka Puff Daddy, aka P. Diddy, aka Diddy—will deliver the commencement address at Howard University’s graduation ceremony this spring.
The school’s President, Wayne A.I. Frederick, announced today that the entrepreneur, philanthropist, entertainment mogul, and rapper will deliver the 147th Commencement address on Saturday, May 10. Combs was a student at Howard University in the late ’80s before he dropped out and moved to New York to work in the record industry. Soon after interning for—and subsequently being fired from—Uptown Records—Combs founded Bad Boy Records, signed Notorious B.I.G. and, well, the rest is history.
Along with Howard’s 1800 students receiving degrees in May, Combs will receive an honorary doctorate in humanities at this year’s convocation.
“In selecting the individuals who will be awarded honorary degrees, Howard University continues the tradition of identifying leaders whose work has clearly contributed to the advancement of their fields and the world,” Frederick said. “We are honored to have Mr. Combs serve as our speaker. He sat in classrooms where our students sit, walked ‘The Yard,’ and like many students, his entrepreneurial spirit was sparked at Howard. We know he will inspire our class to work hard and to always strive for excellence.”
In addition to Combs, Howard will honor four others with honorary degrees: Wolf Blitzer, Clive Callender, Benny Golson, and Indra K. Nooyi.
