A Maryland gubernatorial candidate has voiced her support for legalizing physician-assisted suicide.

Heather Mizeur, a Democratic delegate who represents Montgomery County, writes in an issue paper on “respect for seniors’ medical decisions” that, “for those facing the end of their life due to a terminal illness, we must also ensure access to Death with Dignity.”

If terminally ill, mentally competent adults choose to end their life, they should be able to seek a life-ending dose of medication from their physician. Patients must proactively fill the prescriptions and self-administer the medicine.

Heather and [Lieutenant Governor candidate] Delman [Coates] will introduce executive legislation to prove Death with Dignity, and will also update the state’s standard of care for physicians to ensure their ability to participate in this process.

Mizeur will face Lieutenant Governor Anthony Brown and Attorney General Doug Gansler during the June primary.
