Erika M. Anderson made waves in 2011 with her debut album, Past Life Martyred Saints, under the alias EMA. Her confessional songwriting and stripped down tracks had a toughness garnering her comparisons to early Courtney Love. This year, EMA released a sophomore album The Future’s Void on the band’s new label Matador Records. The Future’s Void is a progression of Anderson’s songwriting, turning the focus both inward and outward taking on subjects like the Internet and NSA surveillance. “So Blonde” plays out like the best Hole song written in years. The track tackles the perception of women on the intent in a short and catchy three minutes. The video, shot in Venice Beach, is gif-tacular, matching the digital commentary of the track.
EMA plays with Downtown Boys Thursday night at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Tickets are $12.
