A D.C. man pleaded guilty today to firing a gun at an unmarked van full of Metropolitan Police Department officers back in January.

According to a release from U.S. Attorney Ron Machen’s office, 23-year-old Shawn Gray pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon, as well as possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a felony, which is a federal offense.

On January 26, a group of MPD officers part of a robbery intervention program were operating in an unmarked burgundy van in the 1600 block of Montello Avenue NE, wearing civilian clothing. While driving through the block, they noticed Gray and another unnamed individual acting suspiciously and went to circle the block again. Upon re-entering, Gray reportedly fired multiple shots at the van. According to court documents, one bullet went in between four officers inside the van and ripped through the other side.

Police say Gray fled on foot but was soon found hiding underneath a parked vehicle nearby. Gray, who was on a supervised release stemming from a 2009 conviction and now faces eight to 10 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for July 25.
