Could it be true? Could our Long, National Local Silver Line Nightmare be over soon? Sounds like it!

Metro General Manager Richard Sarles announced today that Metro is planning to take control of the Silver Line on May 27th, to begin 90 days of testing and training. If all that goes smoothly, the Silver Line could start passenger service sometime toward the end of the summer, The Post reports.

At this point, talks of the Silver Line beginning passenger service may feel like something of an urban legend. With delay, after delay, after delay, after delay, many began to wonder if it would ever be completed. Perhaps the Silver Line was never meant to be completed, but the idea of it only existed to give D.C. area residents a beacon, or symbol of hope to get us through each day, some* wondered. Or perhaps it was some cruel existential joke concocted by transportation officials, others** theorized. But alas, now it seems like this thing is actually happening for real.

During today’s weekly conference call, Sarles said that “based on what we know today, the target date for Operational Readiness (known as ORD) will be Tuesday, May 27th. If the Airports Authority finishes the remaining items sooner, it could be earlier; if things lag, it could be a few days later.” So, there you have it. In writing.

Now, what say you, streetcar?

*By some, I mean just me.

**By others, I also mean just me.
