Future you. Via Shutterstock.Grasshopper tacos at Oyamel: That’s pretty much the first and only option for gourmet bug eating in D.C. I spent a few Google sessions last year looking up ways to cook up the cicadas I anticipated collecting, only to have the 2013 brood disappoint. I resigned myself to watching re-runs of Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel.
Tomorrow, prospective larve munchers across the city will have the chance to summon their inner Andrew Zimmern. A regional pest control company is popping up as the Pestaurant on Pensey. Ehrlich Pest Control will serve guests grasshopper burgers, barbecued mealworms, and scorpion lollipops. For every person that competes in a cricket eating contest, $20 will be donated to the DC Central Kitchen.
The event runs from 11:30 to 3pm at the Occidental Grill and is free and open to the public. The Pestaurant is part of a global event happening in 12 countries, though Washington D.C. is the only city in the United States to have a bug restaurant.
