Despite originally deciding it wasn’t going to organize a vote to endorse Democratic candidate Muriel Bowser in the upcoming general election, the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club—D.C.’s long-running LGBT Democratic club—has changed its mind and voted to endorse her over independent candidate David Catania.
Last night, the club voted to endorse Bowser over Catania, who is openly gay, in a 35 to 8 vote, the Post reports. Despite some opposition from longtime members during a brief debate, Stein Club president Angela Peoples called the issue to a vote, and ultimately, a majority of the club’s members chose to endorse Bowser.
According to the Post, the main opposition to the Bowser endorsement came from two of the club’s longtime members, Don Haines and Paul Kuntzler, one of the club’s co-founders. “We have a choice here: We can make the Stein participation in the election pristine, or it can be clouded,” Haines reportedly said, adding that “changing the rules to turn us into an appendage of the Democratic Party.” Kuntzler, on the other hand, was reportedly less thrilled with the outcome:
That prompted Paul Kuntzler, a co-founder of the club and a Catania supporter, to walk to the front of the room and discuss how the club was founded in his living room in 1976 before announcing, “Decisions made tonight are irrelevant; this club is irrelevant,” and walking out of the building.
