Barriers to prevent mid-block crossings are part of planned improvements to a section of road in College Park where three pedestrians have been killed this year, including a University of Maryland student this weekend.
According to a memo from the Maryland State Highway Administration obtained by WUSA9, several pedestrian safety measures have already been implemented on U.S. 1, including new signs and markings, changing signal timing to decrease wait times for people on foot, and tree trimming. Improvements coming this summer and fall include a new median barrier to deter mid-block crossings and upgraded signals that include countdowns.
Janelle Marie Oni, a 21-year-old UMD student, was fatally struck by a suspected drunk driver at around 3 a.m. Sunday. Another UMD student, Cory Hubbard, was fatally struck by a driver while crossing U.S. 1 in January, and George Washington University student Carlos Pacanins was killed near the same intersection in April.
