Wild Beasts has always had a dramatic flair. Singer Hayden Thorpe’s operatic vocals suit the band’s music perfectly, while drummer Chris Talbot, guitarist Ben Little and co-vocalist/bassist Tom Fleming keep everything in check. Through four gorgeous albums Wild Beasts has grown into one of the tightest and most consistent bands in indie rock. With Present Tense, Wild Beasts double down on the electronics used on Smother and get more personal, removing some of the seediness and replacing it with sensuality. “Mecca” is the closest Wild Beasts has gotten to baby-making music. The ode to making-love is never filthy; instead it is warm in its embrace.
Wild Beasts play with Mutual Benefit at the 9:30 Club Saturday night. Tickets are $20.
