The portion of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House could symbolically become “D.C. Statehood Now Way” under a Council resolution.

The resolution was introduced by Councilmember Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) with Councilmembers Mary Cheh, Jim Graham, Anita Bonds, David Grosso and Vincent Orange. “We have all been or ultimately controlled by Congress,” Alexander said. “No other state must endure the same as the citizens of the District of Columbia.”

“It sends a strong message to the leader of our free nation and the millions of visitors to the nation’s capital that, until D.C. achieves statehood, we are not truly free,” Alexander said of the bill, which would symbolically designate the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue NW as D.C. Statehood Now Way.

“Every opportunity we have to send the message that this city and its people don’t have a vote in Congress is an opportunity we should take advantage of,” Graham said when praising the resolution.

The Council is also considering a resolution to symbolically designate streets near the Capitol as D.C. No Taxation Without Representation Way.

Update: It appears “Way” may be changed to “Boulevard” to avoid confusion.
