Because of some generou$ incentives, House of Cards primarily films in Baltimore despite being set in our fair city. But when the production attempted to film a motorcade scene in D.C. last year, they ran into a big roadblock in their quest to use Metropolitan Police Department vehicles for the shoot.

As the Washington Business Journal reported:

The Netflix production, a dramatic series filmed primarily in Maryland and starring Kevin Spacey as manipulative congressman Frank Underwood, was geared up for a 3 p.m. Aug. 3 shoot of a presidential motorcade running a loop around the National Mall. But Police Chief Cathy Lanier inexplicably pulled the permits that morning, according to multiple sources familiar with the goings-on that day.

“The Metropolitan Police Department is not the lead agency on presidential motorcades and we did not want to portray ourselves as such,” Gwendolyn Crump, MPD spokeswoman, said in an email. “We are sorry that the ‘House of Cards’ representatives are disappointed.”

As Loose Lips later reported, people involved with House of Cards were not impressed with D.C.’s handling of the permit.

Despite the drama, House of Cards has once again secured a permit to film a motorcade scene on the National Mall this year, but only production vehicles will be involved.

The Metropolitan Police Department is “participating from the perspective of handling traffic safety,” according to Leslie Green from the D.C. Office of Motion Picture and Television Development, “but no MPD vehicles will be used in the filming. Only House of Cards production vehicles will be used in the mock motorcade.”

A contact for “the wildly popular web series” is not listed on MPTD’s online announcement because, Green explains, they are “bombarded with calls” when that info is posted. Here’s where House of Cards will be filming from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday:
