Metropolitan Police Department officers have arrested one suspect and are on a manhunt for two others after an off-duty MPD Detective was shot in an attempted carjacking early this morning.
According to MPD, the detective was shot in the 4100 block of Southern Avenue SE at about 3 a.m. In a press conference this morning, MPD Chief Cathy Lanier said that three suspects attempted to steal the off-duty officer’s car after previously firing shots in the area of Suitland Park and Stanton around 2:45 a.m. When the suspects—driving a burgundy Nissan Altima—encountered the detective and attempted to take his car, he fled in his vehicle and they opened fire on him, hitting him several times. Lanier said that detective is in “stable condition.”
The three suspects fled in their Nissan Altima into Prince George’s County, which PG County police soon spotted. The vehicle then came back into D.C., with the suspects crashing along the 5500 block of Hunt Place NE. PG County police detained one of the suspects, but two others got away and police are seeking the public’s help in finding them. Police are asking anyone who saw the vehicle—a burgundy Nissan Altima with New York plates—or has any information to call 202-727-9099, or 911. They’re offering a $10,000 reward for anyone that comes forward with information leading to an arrest.
While police investigate and search for the two suspects, streets near Southern Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Massachusetts Avenue SE remain closed.
