Two firefighters were disciplined after they didn’t come to the aid of a dying man who collapsed near a fire station, a decision D.C.’s interim chief says he “begrudgingly accepted.”

One firefighter was suspended by a trial-board panel for his role in the death of 77-year-old Medric “Cecil” Mills, who suffered a fatal heart attack near Engine 26 in Northeast in January. Another was reprimanded and a third exonerated. None were named. The lieutenant on duty the day Mills collapsed retired before she could face disciplinary action.

“It’s completely unacceptable for these firefighters to not respond to a request for emergency medical services,” interim fire chief Eugene A. Jones said in a release. “Unfortunately, our disciplinary process does not offer the Fire Chief any latitude to render discipline autonomously.”

Mills’ family called for all people involved to be fired. A report from the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice called for five firefighters and four Office of Unified Communications employees to be disciplined, but did not specify how.
