As D.C. students return to school today, teachers have been given a set of suggestions for discussing the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo.

“Recent events in Ferguson, Missouri involving the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown have prompted a broad range of emotions across the United States,” a discussion guide [PDF] from D.C. Public Schools reads. “While the facts of the case are still being sorted out by those in the criminal justice system, these events are teachable moments in classrooms across the District of Columbia Public Schools.”

The ten suggestions, adapted from TeachableMoment.org, include compiling questions from students and making connections between the event and local community. A DCPS spokeswoman says the administration did not make a recommendation for grades that should be involved in a discussion: “We gave it to teachers and they will adjust accordingly.” See the guide below.
