Because of course, Slate says D.C.’s official dessert should be the cupcake.
Brooklynite L.V. Anderson’s reasoning:
The cupcake craze of the early 21st century did not begin in Washington, D.C., but it ended there. Our nation’s capital is home to several independent cupcake bakeries, including Georgetown Cupcake, which rose to prominence on the TLC reality show D.C. Cupcakes—the program that forever linked the District of Columbia with cupcakes in the nation’s imagination. No one tell D.C. that macarons, pie, whoopie pies, and doughnuts are the new cupcake.
It should be noted we have excellent macarons and really good pie. We even have a doughnut crawl because we love them so much.
But while cupcakes are on the decline in popularity and “D.C.’s designer cupcake godfather” has moved on to cake in a jar, it’s hard to argue that the city isn’t well-known for its cupcake obsession. We can fight it, but really, we should just go to Baked and Wired and call it a day.
