>> Mark Meadows is one of the area’s finest young pianists, and is steadily gaining in ability and stature. He released his album, Something Good, earlier this year and will be performing selections from it on Friday at Jazz Night in Southwest. 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets $5.
>> CapitalBop is hosting an outstanding event on Friday. Bass clarinetist Todd Marcus is a mainstay of Baltimore’s highly underrated jazz community. He will headline a show at Union Arts, leading his quartet. Also on the bill is Dwayne Adell, the mind-blowingly talented pianist whose reputation should extend much further than it does. A largely self-taught musician who reads very little music, Adell once won an international Rachmaninoff competition with a piece he learned by ear off a recording. Not only is he a gifted artist, his genius — and we don’t use that word lightly — carries over into mathematics and a variety of other subjects. 8 p.m. Tickets $15.
>> Christian Scott is considered among the finest trumpeters of his generation. He comes to Bohemian Caverns often, and returns to the historic club on Friday and Saturday to lead his quintet. His band includes several musicians with local connections, among them saxophonist Braxton Cook and bassist Kris Funn. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $25 online/$30 at the door.

A long-time member of the U.S. Navy Commodores, he will be at Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday to lead a group of area veterans, all current or former service members. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> It’s the weekend after Labor Day, so once again DMV jazz fans must decide between two battling festivals that take place on Saturday. The 24th Annual Rosslyn Jazz Festival takes place from 1 to 7 p.m. in Gateway Park. The Rebirth Brass Band headlines, and the rest of the lineup features the bhangra-brass band Red Baraat, Ghost Train Orchestra and the Corey Wallace DUBtet. Across the Potomac, the Silver Spring Jazz Festival takes place from 3 to 10 p.m. The Preservation Hall Jazz Band headlining. Smooth jazz keyboardists Marcus Johnson and Elliot Levine are also on the bill. Both festivals are free.
>> The Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club celebrates Brazil’s Independence Day on Saturday with two bands that draw from that country’s rich musical tradition. Nation Beat blends Brazilian maracatu drumming with New Orleans second line rhythms. Alma Tropicália draws from ’60s-era samba and adds a psychedelic mix of rock and funk rhythms. The party starts with a 7 p.m. dance class and continues with the 8:30 p.m. show. Tickets $20 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Transparent Productions kicks off its 18th season this weekend, and continues to partner with Bohemian Caverns for the Sundays @ 7 concert series. This Sunday’s event features the versatile saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock, who will lead a band that includes woodwind artist Tim Berne and other notables from the avant-garde scene. 7 and 8:30 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 in advance/$20 at the door.
>> Blue Monday Blues hosts the Mary Shaver Blues Band. 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets $5.
>> Saxophonists and twin brothers Peter and Will Anderson are area natives who are now making their way through New York’s competitive scene. They’ll play a homecoming performance on Monday at Blues Alley. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $20 plus minimum and surcharge.
