An American University professor was arrested early this morning for allegedly breaking into a shopping center near campus, starting a small fire, and destroying property, police say.

According to a Metropolitan Police Department public information officer, David Pitts was arrested near the Foxhall Square Shopping Center in the 3300 block of New Mexico Avenue NW at 3 a.m. this morning and charged with a destruction of property misdemeanor and burglary. A statement from American University confirms that Pitts is an Associate Professor and the Chair of the Department of Public Administration and Policy.

Police say that Pitts allegedly started a small fire near the parking garage of Foxhall Square prior to breaking in and burglarizing it. Police could not confirm, but the Associated Press reports that he was “found with matches, lighters, gloves, a newspaper, and black liquid substance” when he was arrested.

A statement from American University says they are cooperating with the investigation and another faculty member will immediately assume Pitts’ responsibilities as chair of the department.
