Following the release today of security camera footage that shows Rice assaulting his then-fiancee (now wife) Janay Palmer in the elevator of an Atlantic City hotel in February, the team announced via Twitter that they’ve terminated his contract.
The security camera footage released today shows Rice getting into the elevator with Palmer, punching her in the head, and then dragging her body out after the doors open. The NFL suspended him for two games earlier this year, but Commissioner Roger Goodell admitted it wasn’t enough of a punishment. The NFL claims it did not see the video before handing down the two-game suspension.
After Rice’s suspension was announced, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said that his punishment was “not a big deal. It’s just part of the process,” and added that Rice is “a heck of a guy.”
More information will be available soon, per the team.
