In the never-ending battle to be the cheapest ride in town, taxi dispatch app company Hailo—which claims to “know D.C.”— just announced they’ve cut their rates, making them cheaper than UberX and taxi metered fares, according to a release.
To promote the 50 percent reduction in fares, Hailo enlisted the help of the “The Rent is Too Damn High” guy Jimmy McMillan to proclaim that the “Rates Are Too Damn High.” The rates being that of ride-sharing services like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar. According to Hailo, their services are now “50 percent less than taxi metered fares” on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. “for a limited time, without surge pricing anytime.” Though Hailo says the reduced rates are available for a limited time, they don’t say how long it’ll last.
So a $10 fare under the @Hailo promotion becomes $5 + $1.50 charge to Hailo + tip. 10a to 4p weekdays.

“Hailo’s constructive disruption model enhances the city’s taxi infrastructure, using this major pricing slash to showcase impact in a way that helps the current transit ecosystem, not destroys it,” a release states. “Hailo is positioning taxi drivers with technology and pricing that will allow them to compete.”
Only cabs that use Hailo — and give the company a percentage of their fares — will be cheaper. According to transportation reporter Martin Di Caro, Hailo is subsidizing the reduction with a “50 percent fare cut for D.C. cabbies who use its app,” that way, they won’t lose out on money from their fare.
In the video, McMillan says he’s “joining Hailo’s campaign for change,” and complains about the rates being “too damn high,” and “wants more change…in your pocket. To promote their big price cut, Hailo brought McMillan to D.C. this afternoon, where he talked about those rates being too damn high.

Anyway, if you’re one of those people constantly trying to use the cheapest ride-sharing option, I guess it’s Hailo this week.
