At around 1 a.m. this morning, a police officer was struck by the driver of a vehicle in the 500 block of Eastern Avenue NE and taken to a hospital with serious injuries. She’s now one of the over 300 pedestrians and cyclists who have been struck in D.C. this year, as the above map shows.
At least 352 pedestrians and cyclists have been struck this year, primarily by drivers of vehicles, with six fatalities reported. The information comes from the Twitter account Struck in D.C., which gathers reports from the social media accounts of the Metropolitan Police Department, D.C. fire department and citizens.
Twelve pedestrians and two cyclists were killed in D.C. last year. Just over 7,620 citations were handed out for distracted driving.
A table of the incidents can be seen here. If you or someone you know was struck this year, and it’s not on the map, email sarah@dcist.com to have it added.
