African Americans are more than twice as likely to die from gun violence in the U.S. than whites, according to a study highlighted by WonkBlog.

But that divide is significantly greater in Washington, D.C. Between 2000 and 2010, the firearm-related fatality rate for African Americans was 40.95 per 100,000 people. For whites during the same period, the rate was 3.03 per 100,000 people and 4.71 for Hispanics.

“In Washington D.C. … the death rate associated with firearms is more than thirteen and a half times for African Americans what it is for whites,” as WonkBlog reports.

The highest rate among the states was 30.12 per 100,000 people in Missouri. Other cities were not examined in the study.

The study of CDC data by medical journal BMJ looked at all 50 states and the District of Columbia. It found that D.C. “had the largest significant annual reduction” in the firearm-related fatality rate, with 6.2 lives saved per year.

“Our reported reduction in firearm death rates in D.C. may be attributed to nine laws
preventing illegal gun trafficking,” the study says.
