>> Pianist Chris Grasso has done a fantastic job curating the weekend jazz series at the Loews Madison Hotel. All good things must come to an end, and Grasso and the venue are parting ways. Trio Caliente (Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m.), Nate Najar (Friday, 8 to 11 p.m.) and Julian Hipkins (Saturday 8 to 11 p.m.) will help Weekend Jazz go out with a bang. Free.

>> The local jazz scene got a huge boon when Tarus Mateen decided to make this city his home. A world class bassist who performs regularly with Jason Moran, Marc Cary, as well as a number of hip-hop luminaries, Mateen has also started making his way as a bandleader. His ensemble will be at Bohemian Caverns on Saturday for 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $18 in advance/$23 at the door.
>> October 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution in Jazz, organized by trumpeter Bill Dixon in New York City, which ultimately led to the creation of the Jazz Composers Guild. Musicians from D.C. and New York will celebrate the occasion on Sunday at Union Arts with a series of duo performances. 7 p.m. Tickets $10.
>> The Bad Plus is one of the distinctive trios working in jazz today. They have managed to draw the fine balance necessary to create music that is at once intellectual, emotional and accessible. The group will be at the Barns of Wolf Trap on Sunday in support of its latest album, the all-original Inevitable Western. 7:30 p.m. Tickets $30-$32.
>> Dorado Schmitt is arguably the world’s foremost torchbearer of the Gypsy Jazz tradition that started with the great Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of Paris. He will lead a group of international musicians who have also mastered this language on Sunday at The Howard Theatre. 8 p.m. Tickets $30-$55.
>> A native of Cuba, Roberto Fonseca is quickly moving up the rankings of pianists because of his ability to transcend genres and play with a true sense of melodicism.
