D.C. will appeal a ruling that overturned the city’s ban on carrying handguns in public.

The Office of the Attorney General today confirmed to the City Paper that an appeal will be filed. When asked when the appeal would be available for review, spokesperson Ted Gest told DCist, “We have not committed ourselves on the timing.”

Residents of D.C. are now able to apply for a concealed carry permit through a process with “hurdles” described as “impossible” by the Washington Times. This includes proving legitimate need to carry a gun, 18 hours of classroom and range training and a mental health background check.

The regulation were put in place by the Metropolitan Police Department and shaped by emergency legislation passed by the Council. Judge Frederick Scullin issued a stay on his ruling overturning the ban that expired on October 22. He recently denied the city’s motion to reconsider.
