Amid recent reports that House Republicans are planning to introduce several riders to the House Appropriations Committee to mess with D.C. laws, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton has released a statement saying she’s “working around the clock to protect the District of Columbia’s right to home rule.”

Yesterday, a National Journal article reported, from both Democratic and Republican sources, that the House GOP is planning “on including a provision in an omnibus spending bill that would ban the District from using local funds to carry out the legalization measure.” In addition, it’s no secret that the FY15 omnibus spending bill, which is expected to be released on Monday, will also include riders to defund D.C.’s marijuana decriminalization law and to prohibit the District from enforcing its ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines, both of which have popped up before.

Additionally, Norton’s office says that a rider—which is regularly attached to the appropriations bill—would prohibit D.C. from spending local funds on abortion services for women with low incomes—will, once again, be included.

According to Norton’s office, “she is involved in conversations with House and Senate leaders and the White House asking that they hold fast against Republican efforts to carry House interference with D.C. home rule into the final bill.”

And if that isn’t enough to build confidence that D.C.’s right to home rule is protected, she’d like to remind you about what happened when Rep. Andy Harris and Rep. Thomas Massie first tried to block D.C.’s marijuana decriminalization and gun ban over the summer (spoiler: it didn’t work out. You’ve been warned, House Republicans.
