Ten people were shot—six fatally—during a violent Christmas week in the District. In two instances, police were involved in the shootings.

On Tuesday, December 23, there were four shootings—two in Northeast and two in Northwest D.C. According to the Metropolitan Police Department, shootings in the 400 block of 18th Street NE, the 600 block of 44th Street NW, and the 1200 block of Ingraham Street NW left three injured, while a shooting in the 900 block of Delafield Place NW left one man dead. Officers responded to reports of gunshots at that location at approximately 6:07 p.m., where, upon arrival, they found a 21-year-old male unconscious suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The following day, December 24th, the MPD reports six shootings, including two involving police officers. Fatal shootings occurred at the intersection of 14th and Randolph Street NW, the 1200 block of Stevens Road SE, the intersection of Sherman Avenue and Euclid Street NW, and the intersection of Bladensburg Road and Neal Street NE.

Additionally, MPD officers were involved in two shootings—one fatal—on Wednesday. The first occurred in the 2800 block of Naylor Road SE at 3:12 p.m., when officers from the Sixth District were attempting to contact an adult male who matched the description of a robbery suspect. When he was approached, he “turned toward the pursuing officers and discharged a firearm at them,” according to a release from the MPD. Officers then returned fire, striking the suspect. He was then transported to a nearby hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

At 5:25 p.m., officers from the Fifth District responded to a report of an armed carjacking in the 1300 block of Adams Street NE. After a brief pursuit of the subject, the MPD says he discharged a firearm towards the officers in the 1600 block of W Street NW. Officers returned gunfire, striking and wounding the suspect. He’s being charged with Assault on a Police Officer While Armed, and Armed Carjacking.
