With only a few days left until she’s inaugurated into office, mayor-elect Muriel Bowser announced three key appointments to her administration today: Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt as Director of Health; Laura Zeilinger as Director of Human Services; and Clinton Lacey as Director of Youth Rehabilitation Services.

These three appointments, Bowser said in a release, will “help tackle homelessness and provide critical services to those most in need in the District.” As part of her goals as mayor, Bowser has pledged to end family homelessness in D.C. by 2018 and overall homelessness by 2025.

“LaQuandra, Laura, and Clinton bring an extraordinary level of expertise to help address two priorities that will be a hallmark of my Administration: homelessness and our youth. I’m excited they will join a team that is ready to give more residents a fair shot in the District of Columbia,” Bowser said in a statement.

Dr. Nesbitt, who most recently served as the Director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness in Ky., will ensure the Department on Health continues to promote healthy lifestyles as well as finding ways to provide equal access to healthcare for all D.C. residents.

Zeilinger comes from the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness where she served as the Executive Director. Working in Bowser’s administration, she’ll “lead an agency charged with assisting low-income individuals and families to maximize their potential for economic security and self-sufficiency.” In a statement from Miriam’s Kitchen, where Bowser announced the appointments today, the organization applauded Zeilinger’s appointment, saying “as the former Deputy Director for Program Operations for the D.C. DHS, Mrs. Zeilinger designed and implemented the District’s Housing First Initiative, which connected 500 individuals and 80 families to housing in its first year alone. Her efforts led to the creation of more than 1,000 units of permanent supportive housing as part of the Homeless No More Plan.”

As Director of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, Lacey will work with troubled youth in the city and work with them to find opportunities “to become productive citizens in the District.”
