Attention unemployed masses of the country! D.C. ranks as the 17th best city in the country for job-seekers, according to a new study by the financial website NerdWallet.
And how did they determine this? NerdWallet looked at a handful of variables—job availability, workforce growth, affordability—to figure out which city reigned supreme for job-seekers. While D.C.’s affordability is questionable (their chart has median monthly rent at an eye-watering $1,307, the highest of all ranked cities), the median income (over $65,000) is high enough to make up for steep costs.
What likely tipped D.C. over the edge and into the final line-up was the unemployment rate. Nation-wide, it’s about 6 percent, but it’s at 4.7 percent in the District. And working-age population growth probably didn’t hurt—9.36 percent between the years 2009 and 2013.
The rankings took the nation’s 100 biggest cities into account, so 17 out of 100 is a pretty good place to be, no?
