If you’ve taken a step outside today, you know it’s cold as crap out. If you haven’t; stay inside. Trust us.
It’s so cold that Mayor Muriel Bowser has declared a cold emergency tonight “in anticipation of frigid, dangerous weather.” The cold emergency will last until Monday, giving you all the more reason to stay inside all weekend and read book, or something.
With this weekend’s cold snap—coupled with high gusts of bitter wind, to boot—the city’s homeless population are at serious risk. That means the city will open up additional sheltering and warming sites to keep those on the street warm and safe.
If you see someone on the streets this weekend here’s how to help them:
- Call the Shelter Hotline toll-free at 1-800-535-7252.
- Email uposh@upo.org with the time when the person was seen, their specific location, and a description of the person’s appearance.
- Call 911, if you see someone on the street that needs immediate assistance.
