With winter (hopefully) fast on its way out, many are eager to enter the season of drinking outdoors. But not at any of D.C.’s local breweries, of course.

But that could change under a new bill introduced by Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie today that would allow local breweries to have seating for people to drink outside. Under the current law, breweries, wineries, and distilleries in D.C. aren’t allowed to have alcohol consumed outside of their facilities, but McDuffies bill would allow for “artisan alcohol manufacturers” to apply for outdoor seating.

“The brewery, winery and distillery industries have been fantastic examples of the adaptive reuse of industrial land which I have championed since taking office,” McDuffie said in a statement. “This bill builds on that success by allowing them to apply for sidewalk cafés or summer gardens, which could further enhance the aesthetic quality of their business and the surrounding neighborhood. Moreover, the District stands to gain from any potential increase in tax revenue.”

McDuffie’s bill was co-introduced by the entire D.C. Council because who doesn’t like drinking outside?
