One of these things is not like the other ones. Image via Reddit.

Lance Futch expected to be just another face in the crowd of a large auditorium, nodding politely (or nodding off) as a “senior White House official” spoke at a press conference.

Then they sat the 26-year-old down at an empty round table—where the placards included one for President Obama as well as Sen. Orrin Hatch, Rep. Rob Bishop, and Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker.

Futch looked down at his wrinkled white polo and did a mental headslap.

“When President Obama walked in the room, I’m looking down at my white polo going, ‘Well, if I would have known this, I would have worn my military blues or at least a suit and tie,’ he told the NY Post.

A photo of him looking eager, but rather out of his element surfaced on Reddit where one person asked: “How did Kenneth get to meet the President?”

Turns out his company sent him. Vivint Solar was invited to send a representative who had a military affiliation to the event. So they went with Futch, a member of the Air National Guard, and instructed him to wear business casual clothes, per the invitation.

“I was sitting there. Honestly one of the first thoughts to go through my mind is: ‘My commander on the base is going to kill me for this.’ I should have known better,” Futch said.

But his employer definitely won’t. Futch was able to pitch Vivint to POTUS after the president asked him about his polo, which had the company’s logo printed on it.
