Could the streetcar soon begin passenger service? Who knows! But the streetcar has resumed simulated service, which can only mean passenger service isn’t too far off, right? RIGHT?

The District Department of Transportation announced last week that they’re “going full steam ahead” in preparing for the launch of the H Street/Benning Road NE streetcar line, although it doesn’t say when that may be.

The streetcar’s simulation was paused a little while ago as crews worked to fix repairs to the rails. WAMU reported that crews were working to fix sections of the rail after “two minor breaks last year and two this year.”

It might seem soon for crews to already be fixing rails for a streetcar system that hasn’t even begun passenger service yet, but keep in mind those rails were laid down in 2008.

In addition to resuming passenger service, DDOT says they’re “ramping up outreach efforts and increasing [presence] on the corridor as streetcar vehicles make their return.”

DCist reached out to DDOT to see if they had any information about when the streetcar might begin passenger service but—shocker—we haven’t heard back yet. We’ll be in the Waiting Room until we do.
