Cinco de Mayo has officially joined the illustrious list of holidays where mass numbers of celebrants get so drunk that they cannot be trusted to make safe transportation choices and someone else is willing to pay to make sure they do.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program has added the fifth of May to SoberRide, the program that offers free taxi rides around the DMV during alcohol-soaked periods of time.
It is the first time in nearly 20 years that WRAP saw fit to add a new “holiday offering,” adding the commemorations of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla tacos, beer, and Jose Cuervo to the list of St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Halloween, and the winter holidays.
In 2013, 41 percent of all car crash deaths during Cinco de Mayo involved drunk driving (down from a whopping 45 percent the year before), according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. About a fifth of drivers involved in fatal crashes last year had BACs of .15 or higher.
So needless to say, blitzed revelers should stay off the roads after the fiestas are over. And now they can do it at no cost. Between 4:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., partiers can call 1-800-200-TAXI (8294) to receive a free ride home (for fares up to $30)
Participating taxicab companies include: Alexandria Yellow Cab; Barwood; Fairfax Yellow Cab; Loudoun Yellow Cab; Northern Virginia Checker Cab; Red Top Cab; Silver Cab of Prince George’s County; Yellow Cab of D.C.; and Yellow Cab of Prince William County.
