>> Antonio Hart has been a respected and in-demand saxophonist for the better part of 25 years, honing a distinct post-bop style as a bandleader and with a who’s who of jazz greats. On Friday, he returns to the Kennedy Center with his organ trio to explore that format’s rich jazz heritage. 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. sets. Tickets $26-$32.

>> A long time protégé of late great saxophonist Jackie McLean, pianist Alan Jay Palmer is an established educator, composer, and performer based out of New York. His more recent credits include stints with trumpeter Roy Hargrove’s quintet and work as music director for rapper Common. Palmer will lead his band on Friday at Bohemian Caverns. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. >> Kenny Wessel first gained recognition playing with the innovative saxophonist Ornette Coleman in his groundbreaking group, Prime Time. He has released a number of albums as a leader and will bring his latest group to Twins Jazz on Friday and Saturday. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> The Arts Bar at the Capital Fringe HQ (1358 Florida Avenue NE) hosts Chicago-based bassist Joshua Abrams on Saturday. In addition to being the original bassist for The Roots while still living in Philadelphia, he is a mainstay of the Windy City’s music scene and will perform with his group, Natural Information Society. The band’s sound is centered on the Guimbri (a Gnawan lute), integrating composition and improvisation to create hypnotic and psychedelic soundscapes. 10 p.m. Free.
>> CapitalBop‘s monthly Jazz Loft returns to Union Arts on Sunday and as usual, the lineup is fantastic. Pianist Bobby Jasinski will lead a septet through tunes from his latest album, Retrospection, spoken word artist Karega Bailey will perform with a jazz combo, and saxophonist Bobby Muncy has assembled his Big Bastard Big Band to play his original compositions and arrangements. 7:30 p.m. $15 suggested donation.
>> Monster trombonist Frank Lacy earned his first notices in the early ’80s as a result of his ability to straddle mainstream and avant-garde musical forms. He has played with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey on the one hand, but has also spent time with such free jazz pioneers as Henry Threadgill, Oliver Lake and Julius Hemphill. Lacy will bring his Legacy Band to Bohemian Caverns on Saturday and Sunday. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $23 in advance/$28 at the door.
>> New York’s iconic Apollo Theater and the Kennedy Center are collaborating to present Harlem Nights/U Street Nights, a series of performances designed to explore the jazz connections between New York and the nation’s capital.
