Yes, it is hot today. How hot? Right now, the temperature in D.C. is about 89 degrees fahrenheit, which makes the tenth straight day of 80 degree weather we’ve had.
“Ten days!? That must be some kind of record!” You might be saying to yourself. You’re right! In fact, with today’s temperature, we just set a new record for most-consecutive 80-degree days for the first half of May, according to the Capital Weather Gang.
The previous record was set in 2000, when eight days of 80-degree days in the first half of May. Before that, in 1930, 1889, and 1872, each with seven-day runs of 80-degree temperatures around this time. Though 80-degree days in May are hardly rare, this recent strong of them “has boosted [May’s] average temperature to over 8 degrees above normal,” CWG says.
Today’s temperature, which has been the hottest of 2015 so far, won’t last though. Things will cool down tomorrow, with a high around 70. Thursday will be slightly warmer, with highs between 70 and 75, and will continue to rise into the weekend and early next week. Happy summer, nerds.
