Two women—21-year-old Jamyra Gallmon and 19-year-old Dominique Johnson—pled guilty in the murder of a lawyer at a downtown D.C. hotel in February.
30-year-old David Messerschmitt—an intellectual-property attorney for the Washington office of law firm DLA Piper—was found stabbed to death on Tuesday, February 10, just after 11 a.m. at the Donovan Hotel in Thomas Circle.
In April, the Metropolitan Police Department arrested Gallmon, of Washington, D.C., and charged her with first-degree felony murder while armed. According to the investigation, Messerscmitt posted an ad on Craigslist soliciting a romantic meet up with other men. Gallmon replied, pretending to be a man interested in meeting with Messerschmitt and the two arranged to meet at a hotel room at the Donovan at 7:30 p.m.
Police say Gallmon and Johnson planned to rob Messerschmitt prior to the arranged meeting. When Gallmon arrived at the hotel, concealing her identity with a jacket and hood, she attempted to rob Messerschmitt, but he fought back and she stabbed him approximately seven times. Afterwards, she took Messerschmitt’s cell phone and SmarTrip card and left the hotel.
Gallmon pled guilty to second-degree murder while armed and faces a sentence between 18 and 25 years in prison. Johnson pled guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and faces a maximum of five years in prison.
“Our hearts go out to everyone who knew and loved David Messerschmitt,” Acting U.S. Attorney Vincent H. Cohen said in a statement. “It is outrageous that a young man with such a promising future was murdered over a cell phone and a Metro card. We can only hope that the rapid apprehension and conviction of those responsible for his death will help his loved ones find some sense of peace.”
