Obviously that headline isn’t true, but according to Google Trends data, Washingtonians googled “tongue” for a spell check more than any other word.

In honor of the Scripps Nation Spelling Bee, which took place in D.C. this week (the winners and the memorable moments can be found here), Vocativ teamed up with Google Trends to see just how much better young spellers can spell than the rest of the country.

Through analyzing trends, Vocativ put together this graphic depicting which word was Googled for a spell check the most in each state and the District. While Washingtonians have trouble with “tognue,” people in Arkansas have trouble spelling “diarrhea” and Hawaiians aren’t too sure about the spelling of “pterodactyl.” While “tounge” might not seem that hard to spell, at least we can spell “grey,” which people in California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, and Virginia seem to have trouble spelling.

Still, “tounge.” What’s so hard about that? T-O-N-G-E. Tung. Easy.
