Local charities have raised more than $675,000 today through the “Do More 24” campaign.

Organized by the United Way of the National Capital Area, more than 600 nonprofits in the District, Northern Virginia, and Montgomery and Prince George’s are competing to raise funds during the 24-hour event. It ends at 11:59 p.m.

Thus far, the most number of people—453— have given to Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. But Year Up, which helps provide professional training to young adults, is winning the financial total, with more than $44,000 pledged.

The two small organizations (with revenues under $1 million) and two large organizations (who have revenues of $1 million or more) that raise the most money and the organization that has the most individual donations will win grand prizes of $7,500 or $10,000. There are also a number of other specific categories and challenges that the groups involved can compete to win. If there’s a local charity you particularly like, chances are pretty good they are participating and now would be a good time to give.

Last year, nonprofits raised more than $1.1 million over the course of the event.
