Chompie: Yeah, we know what you’re going to say. He’s a giant, inflatable, five-piece mascot and he isn’t even in D.C. But Discovery’s Shark Week is one of the great summer traditions, and for its 25th year, Chompie, the mascot to eat all other mascots, made his tremendous return to Discovery Communicatons’ headquarters over downtown Silver Spring.
It’s almost summer, which means that America’s favorite week-long holiday, Discovery Channel’s Shark Week, is upon us.
But for Silver Spring residents, Shark Week is an especially special time of the year, as Discovery Channel’s quarters sometimes outfits their building with a massive inflatable shark, lovingly known as Chompie.
Chompie doesn’t make an appearance every year, however. In fact, the last time Chompie graced the building was in 2012. And this year he won’t be making a reappearance. Discovery Channel just announced they’re asking people to vote for a Shark Week-themed mural to grace the side of their headquarters this year.
A spokesperson for Discovery confirmed that Chompie wouldn’t be coming back for 2015 saying the they “are doing something new and different this year.” Anyway, if you want to vote for one of three designs—”Love Bites,” “Jawsome,” and “I Heart Shark”—you can do so here. Maybe Chompie will reappear next year.
