>> Terence Blanchard is among the most celebrated jazz artists of his generation and is someone DCist has written much about in the past. The E-Collective is Blanchard’s new electric band; it explores the intersection of jazz, R&B, funk, and jazz fusion. The group is in the middle of a week-long run at Blues Alley that ends on Sunday. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $40 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> The Harry Bells is a group that saxophonist Matt Rippetoe (one of the first local jazz musicians we profiled here on DCist) co-founded with the ubiquitous trumpeter Joe Herrera. The band plays an infectious calypso style inspired by Harry Belafonte and will perform tonight at the Bossa Bistro & Lounge. 10 p.m. Tickets $5.
>> The D.C. Jazz Composers Collective is a local non-profit committed to performing original jazz compositions in the D.C. metro area. >> Ginger Baker, the legendary drummer best known for his work with Cream and Blind Faith, gave one of the most amusing interviews in the history of DCist prior to his show last year. He returns to The Howard Theatre on Friday with his quartet. 8 p.m. Tickets $42.50-$80.
>> Allyn Johnson is a world class pianist who has been a mainstay of the local jazz community for over 20 years. He’ll lead a group of the area’s finest though 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. sets on Friday and Saturday at Bohemian Caverns. Tickets $18 in advance/$23 at the door.
>> Drummer Robert Shahid leads a quartet featuring organist Greg Hatza on Friday and Saturday at Twins Jazz. 9 and 11 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Saxophonist Christian Winther‘s band, Soul House, draws from a variety of jazz traditions, making him a regular at clubs in his home base of New Orleans. Winther and his band will pay a visit to Twins Jazz for a Saturday afternoon/evening performance. 4 and 6 p.m. sets. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> High Definition Quartet is a band out of Poland that is making a serious name for itself in Europe. They are touring the U.S. now and will be making a stop at Bohemian Caverns for a Sunday afternoon performance. 4:30 p.m. Tickets $20 in advance/$25 at the door.
>> Sons of the jazz icon Dave Brubeck, drummer Dan and composer-bassist-trombonist Chris, form The Brubeck Brothers Quartet with guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb. The band will be at AMP on Sunday. 7 p.m. Tickets $35-$45.
>> Leena Conquest is a vocalist that is a part of the New York underground jazz scene that revolves around bassist William Parker. She will make a rare D.C. appearance on Sunday at Bohemian Caverns. 7 and 9 p.m. sets. Tickets $15 in advance/$20 at the door.
>> Busy area saxophonist Bobby Muncy will lead one of his own groups on Sunday at Twins Jazz. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Olli Hirvonen is a Finnish jazz guitarist currently based in Brooklyn. He has performed at major festivals throughout Europe and North America, and his trio will perform on Monday at Twins Jazz. 8 and 10 p.m. sets. Tickets $10 plus minimum and surcharge.
>> Christie Dashiell is one of the District’s most gifted vocalists, and she first made a splash as a soloist with Howard University’s Afro Blue as they made an impressive run on NBC’s The Sing Off.
