Ten months into Drawn to Flavor and I’ve completely neglected lunch! It’s only fitting then that this first foray into mid-day meals and sandwiches is happening at The Partisan (709 D Street NW) in Penn Quarter.
The Partisan opened last year as one of the newest Neighborhood Restaurant Group restaurants, and the sit-down restaurant is a kind of extension of Chef Nate Anda’s Red Apron Butcher. The restaurant is attached to butcher shop, offering cuts little known to the general public like pork ribeye cap and beef bavette. And The Partisan is probably best known for its large range of artisanal, house-made charcuterie. Still, a lot of people work around there, and The Partisan serves some great lunch options.
I keep coming back to their chorizo burger, which is also available at all three Red Apron locations. It’s flavorful—but not overwhelming—and a size that fits in your hand but isn’t too big for lunch. Let’s take it apart piece by piece: First the brioche/potato-roll-like bun from Panorama is toasted yet soft. The wide, thick slice of chorizo is a little spicy and well-seasoned. It’s topped with a smoked chimichurri, sour cream, and pickled onions. Generous slices of ripe avocado add a nice creaminess. Lunch, may I never forget you again.
