Drive out to Reston in a few days and you’ll come about as close to the Olympics as the region has ever managed.

Fairfax County is playing host to the 16th World Police and Fire Games—which run June 26 through July 5. More than 12,000 police officers, firefighters, customs and correction officers will take part, and another 30,000 visitors are expected to come watch 70-ish events.

Sure there will be plenty of regular old Olympic sports like swimming and volleyball. But unencumbered by the International Olympic Committee’s rulings of what constitutes a sport, the biennial games include some rather less conventional competitions.

All of the events are free and open to the public (though the opening ceremony, boxing, and bodybuilding require complimentary tickets). Here are a couple of events you probably won’t have many chances to see elsewhere:

June 26: Athletes from more than 70 countries will be taking part in the games. Enjoy some pageantry at the opening ceremony at RFK Stadium. Request complimentary tickets here.

June 27: Firefighters tackle stairs while wearing full gear in the appropriately named Stair Race taking place at the Tysons Tower (7900 Tysons One Place, McLean)

June 27-28: The games aren’t just for humans, it turns out. Police Service Dogs get in on the action at Lake Fairfax Park (1400 Lake Fairfax Dr.)

June 27-30: The Toughest Competitor Alive is crowned after eight events, taking place at Westfield High School (4630 Stonecroft Boulevard, Chantilly)

June 28-29: Your chance to see a Crossfit competition in real life at the Lerner Town Square at Tysons II (8025 Galleria Drive, Tysons)

July 1: Dredge up summer camp memories with Tug of War at Fairfax Gov Center (12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax)

July 2: Wrist Wrestling goes down at Reston Town Center Pavilion (11900 Market Street, Reston)
