The body found burning in a trash can on Tuesday died of gunshot wounds, D.C. police have determined.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the cause of death of the body, which was found in a burning trash can in the 1200 block of Holbrook Terrace NE, was determined to be gunshot wounds.

Police first responded to reports of a fire at 5:42 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23. When they arrived and extinguished the fire, they discovered human remains in the trash can. The body has not been identified other than that it is of a black male.

Police are investigating the case as a homicide and asking anyone with information to contact them at (202) 727-9099.e manner of death is homicide. It was also determined that the decedent is a black male.
